The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is going to lapse in three weeks unless Congress acts. A six-month extension of the program was included in the Senate version of the unrelated Farm Bill, but, while the conference committee’s work between members of the House and the Senate on their respective versions of the Farm Bill is underway, it is uncertain whether it will finish its work on a compromise Farm Bill by the NFIP deadline of July 31. And even if it does, it is unclear whether the House will even conceptually agree to the extension included in the Senate Farm Bill.

PIA National is actively urging Congress to not rely on the Farm Bill process and act promptly on either a long-term reauthorization or a short-term extension of the program. As part of this advocacy effort, PIA National issued a grassroots action alert to PIA agents around the country asking them to contact their U.S. Senators and House members to ask that they act before July 31. In addition, PIA National signed on to a joint insurance trades letter urging Congress to act before July 31.
