The winner of this year’s PIA National Young Insurance Professional of the Year Award, Scott Harwood Jr. of Farmville, Virginia, comes from a family with an insurance tradition. In 1886, his great-great grandfather started the Farmville Fire Insurance Company. Scott’s great grandfather, grandfather and father all worked in the insurance industry. But a career in insurance wasn’t Scott Harwood Jr.’s first thought. “I wanted to be a rock star,” he admits. Eventually, “I realized I wasn’t going to be Led Zeppelin.” So he went back to college and started working at his father’s agency – and hasn’t looked back.
Scott’s involvement in PIA was also a natural progression. His father, Scott Sr., is a past president of PIA National. Scott Jr. rose through the ranks of PIA VA/DC, serving as president in 2004. You can read the full Rough Notes profile of Scott here.
