New Mississippi Insurance Commissioner to Let Legislature Decide on Appointive Status

Mississippi’s new Insurance Commissioner, Mike Chaney, who was elected to the post in November but assumed the job early because longtime Commissioner George Dale stepped down before his term was scheduled to end, says his main goals are to ensure predictability and stability in the insurance market for insurers and consumers.

Chaney, who said during his campaign that he would make changing the commissioner’s post to an appointive one a priority, now says he will let the state’s Legislature determine whether the job should be appointive or elective. At the start of his campaign, Chaney said a priority would include making the office appointive. Chaney now says that was his personal opinion, not a call for change.
