The National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service have funded a program to promote Hurricane Preparedness Week, May 25th through May 31st. They are asking residents in hurricane-prone areas to review with their families and friends their disaster preparation plans. This review should include an examination of your current homeowner’s insurance policy. If you live in a flood prone area, you should remember that most homeowner's policies do not include flood coverage. You may want to investigate getting additional flood insurance – and remember, even if you are not in a designated flood plain, flood insurance can provide extra assurance in preparation for the hurricane season.
The hurricane season begins June 1.
Both the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service also recommend:
- During Hurricane Preparedness Week, you should also put together your Family Disaster Plan. It should include determining the safest place in your home, where you all should gather if you have leave, and what you're going to do with yours pets.
- Your Disaster Plan should also include what to do in the event you have to evacuate. You need to have an idea of where you are going and the best route to get there depending on the path of the storm. You should also have a place where family can gather if you get separated.
- Your Disaster Supply Kit should also be assembled this week. Your kit may not differ much regardless of where you ride out the storm, whether you are forced to evacuate or stay in your own home. You'll need to have food, water, flashlights, batteries, prescription medications and extra cash.
